About the History of Liverpool with Liverpool Jobs

The City of Liverpool began as a tidal pool on the Eastern side of the Mersey and was probably called the “lifer pol” which meant the Muddy Pool.

The City was not mentioned in the Domesday Book.
1207 Liverpool was given a Royal Charter by King John.
There was no town at this point so it seems as though King John wanted a new town to support his Irish conquests, the place that Liverpool has on the Mersey was a fine place to develop a settlement.
John divided Liverpool into plots called “burgages” and invited people to live there.
1229 Liverpool was granted another Charter. In Liverpool the Guildsmen elected an official called a Reeve to run the town.
1235 Castle built by this time.
1295 two MP’s sent to Parliament.

1315 Castle was besieged during the “Banastre Revolt” it was not captured.
1349 the Black Death arrived.
1323 Edward II stayed at Liverpool Castle.
The first Chapel in Liverpool was the Chapel of St Mary, by the middle of the 14th century there was also the Chapel of “Our Lady and St Nicholas”.
St Nicholas is the Saint for sailors appropriate for Liverpool.
1515 A Grammar school was founded.
1558 The Plague arrives
1564 First mention of the Townsend Bridge, this is a stone bridge carrying Dale Street over the Pool.
1588 Everton Beacon burns to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada.
1591 Toxteth Park has its Park status removed. Up until this point it was a Royal Deer Park.
1642 At the start of the civil war Liverpool was a Royal town.
1643 Parliamentarians took the town after street fighting.
1644 Prince Rupert besieged the town with his troops overlooking the town on surrounding hills. Beacon hill and Copperas hill for example.
Prince Rupert forced entry into the town via present day Old Hall Street and exacted “revenge” on the people of Liverpool. (June)
1644 (October) Parliamentarian troops regained the town.
1654 the fortifications of Liverpool were dismantled.
1666 The “Antelope” leaves port for the America’s and returns with Sugar cane.
1668 Lord Molyneux street constructed from the Castle to the pool now Lord Street.
1673 Anew town Hall was built on pillars
1698 The new Parish of Liverpool developed with the twin churches of St Nicholas and St Peter.

1700 the population was approx 7,000 most being resident on or near Dale Street.
1704 St Peter’s church consecrated. (demolished in 1922)
1708 First charity school opened.
1710The Pool filled in and the Old Dock built at its former mouth.
1726 The last remains of the castle were finally demolished and the church of St George was built in its place.
1726 Blue coat school opened in School lane.
1734 The Salthouse Dock began construction.
1740 The Strand was laid out along the original water line. As the name suggests on a strip of sand.
1748 Night watchmen first patrolled the streets.
1749 New infirmary built.
During the 18th century sugar refinery, rope making and ship building became important industries.
1753 Everton toffee shop opened by Molly Bushell.
1754 Present Town Hall opened.
1761 First coach service from London to Liverpool.
1770 Work began on the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
1788 Kings Dock opened.
1793 Goree Piazzas opened, reconstructed after fire in 1802 destroyed by Luftwaffe during second war.

1802 Botanical Gardens opened.
1805 Last Duel fought in Liverpool
1814 The Royal Southern Hospital opens.
1830 Liverpool to Manchester railway opened.
1834 Stanley Hospital opens.
1835 City boundary extended to include: Kirkdale, Everton, Toxteth Park, Parts of West Derby.
1836 Lime Street station opened.
1829 Aintree race course opened first winner of a four mile race was “Captain Belcher”
1839 first Grand National.
1841 census 223,000 population.
1842 Workhouse on Brownlow rebuilt to house 1,800 people the largest in the country.
1843 Prince’s Park laid out. Purchased by Council in 1918.
1845 Albert Dock opened.
1849 Cholera epidemic.
1851 census 376,000 most of the increase due to potato famine in Ireland, most being Irish.
1854 St Georges Hall opened.
1857 Water supply began to Liverpool.
1859 Canada Dock.
1860 William Brown Libarary.
1871 Stanley Park opened.
1872 Sefton Park opened.
1877 Walker Art Gallery opened
1879 St Domingo Football club changes name to Everton.
1880 Liverpool officially becomes a city.
1894 Manchester ship Canal built.
1894 First football match between Liverpool and Everton. Everton won 2-0.
1895 Boundary extended to include West Derby, Wavertree, Toxteth and Walton.

1901 Census population 685,000 approx.
1903 Liverpool independent University formed.
1911 The Liver building opens.
1913 The Meccano factory opens.
1934 The Mersey Tunnel opens.
1940 Estate in Woolfall Heath opens as a detention camp.
1941 Goree Piazzas destroyed by bombing.
1942 Last bombing raid.
During the Second World War 3,875 people were killed in Merseyside by Luftwaffe bombing.
1945 Last Tram runs.

1955 Liverpool City Council controlled by the labour party for the first time.
1957 the Cavern Club and the Mardi Gras open.
1964 Last people to be executed in Britain at Strangeways and Walton Prisons.
1967 Roman Catholic Cathedral consecrated.
1974 The boundaries of the City changed to become an area called Merseyside.
1978 Anglican Cathedral completed.
1980 Merseyside Maritime Museum opened
1981 Riots in City
1988 Tate Gallery opened.
1994 Customs and Excise Museum opens.
1996 Institute for performing Arts opens.
2003 Capital of Culture.
2007 800th anniversary.
